What is an Advance Directive?
An Advance Directive is a legal document letting your loved ones and healthcare workers know what medical treatments you want or do not want if you were not able to tell them yourself. With an Advance Directive your values can be communicated even if you are unable to do so at a later time.
An Advance Directive only goes into effect when you are unable to make your own healthcare decisions. For some people, staying alive as long as medically possible is very important. For others, it might be more important to avoid pain, to live only when able to socialize with friends or family, or to avoid specific types of treatment. An Advance Directive can be changed at any time that your wishes change.
