What are antiviral medications?
Antiviral medications are drugs that fight against viruses such as the flu or COVID-19. FDA approved on October 22, 2020, remdesivir remains the only antiviral drug approved for treatment of COVID-19. Ritonavir-boosted nirmatrelvir, molnupiravir, and some anti-SARS-Cov-2 monoclonal antibodies are available with an emergency use authorization only. All antiviral medications are only available by prescription from a licensed medical provider or in the hospital setting when ordered by a licensed medical provider. Antiviral medications differ from antibiotics which fight against disease-causing bacteria.
