Why should I consider a COVID-19 SOS Directive if I already have an Advance Directive?
A COVID-19 SOS Directive differs from an Advance Directive in that a COVID-19 SOS Directive is specific to emergency situations in which important medical resources are scarce due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A COVID-19 SOS Directive can stand alone or be added to an Advance Directive. The COVID-19 SOS Directive allows you to communicate your wish for others in need to be given potentially lifesaving care first. It expresses this wish in advance of the actual need and helps to make loved ones and healthcare providers aware of those wishes.
Having a COVID-19 SOS Directive does not keep you from having an Advance Directive, but it can say that where this Directive is not consistent with your Advance Directive, the COVID-19 SOS Directive controls.
Creating your COVID-19 SOS Directive
If you decide you want a COVID-19 SOS Directive, you need to:
Fill out the form and have it signed and dated by you and your witnesses.
Tell your loved ones and doctors that you have an SOS Directive.
